Toronto, Ontario – This holiday season Michael Kash and Bridge Productions bring you a comedy that’s not festive. Opening on Thursday, November 10th and running through to Saturday, December 10th at The Alley Theatre Workshop (12 Ossington Avenue) is Harry’s Christmas written by Steven Berkoff. Critically acclaimed playwright Steven Berkoff has written numerous plays and is best known for film credits such as A Clockwork Orange, Octopussy and Beverley Hills Cop. “There is no one like Berkoff and there’ll never be another.” Daily Mail (London, England). To add to the tidings, is the collaboration between New York’s renowned Broadway director Brian Murray and Toronto’s Alley Theatre Workshop, living up accordingly to ATW’s “commitment to opening up a corridor between New York and Toronto for artistic exchanges between actors, writers and directors.”
Harry’s Christmas follows the comic torment of congenitally introverted Harry, less than a week before the big day. The spotlight of Christmas has exposed his exaggerated sense of worthlessness and Harry’s only holiday companion seems to be his Mum. He tallies up past and present Christmas cards and desperately tries to reconnect with his old girlfriend and buddies of Christmas’ past. We count down the days with Harry, watching his journey of self-discovery, torturous nostalgia and attempts to convince himself it will all be okay. Christmas will pass and life will return to normal. He just has to get through it and talk to someone other than his Mum.
Broadway’s Brian Murray (three-time TONY nominee, Theatre Hall of Fame, Drama Desk Awards, Outer Critics Circle Awards) will direct Michael Kash (2001 DORA nominee for Pounding Nails In The Floor With My Forehead by Eric Bogosian), marking Murray’s Toronto directorial debut. Brian Murray’s career spans 50 years including work in London’s West End, The Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford, New York (19 Broadway credits - 6 for Directing), Chicago and South Africa. He has worked with Sir Peter Hall, Peter Brook, Sir Derek Jacobi, Kevin Klein, Edward Albee, Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Stockard Channing, Doug Hughes and many more.
Set and Lighting by Joe Madziak and Dave Taylor, costume design by Iona Greenham.
