JAKALOPE- BAND OR BEAST??
JAKALOPE- BAND OR BEAST??
For the fans that turned out at the MOD CLUB on 03.04.05, soon found out there is a “BEAUTY mixed in with the BEAST of JAKALOPE and her name is KATIE B. First of all, Jakalope is not your average band! They are combined of some legendary musicians, artists and producers. Just the compilation of artists alone that worked on their debut album, released this year, is enough to make your head spin!
The concept was created by world- renowned producer and mixer Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, David Bowie) and in late 2003 in Vancouver JAKALOPE was born!! Jakalope landed in my top 6 albums to listen to as I cruised about the city streets of Toronto for a record 6 weeks and more! (CURRENT TOP 6 ARE: Gwen Stefani, Jem, Low Millions, Jakalope, Jet and Michael Buble-don’t ask!). After having the opportunity to catch them live at the MOD CLUB, I was impressed by the fact that KATIE B. landed the vocals to a T! Each and every track was sang just as well LIVE as the recorded versions, which is never an easy task by any artist. Jakalope has been a bit of an enigma for the past few months, prior to their most recent concert events. Remaining invisible has created a bit of a mystique for the band, drawing in many fans with the simple quest to find out “WHAT DO THEY LOOK LIKE”! Well, I think part of the “beast” element is the fact that 5 men, surround Katie B. on stage, all at one time, adding to the more predominant male rock image. The plus side is that they PERFORM along WITH her, not lingering around the back of the stage or involved in their own production of the music. When you have that many people on stage at once, you expect to see something DAMN exciting!!
For the most part, one of the guitarists and keyboardists/guitarist were accented the young beauty quite well, as for the rest of the band- they could have taken it up just a notch. None however outshone Katie B’s performance and she stood her ground and “rocked” the crowd. Her movements on stage were every bit ROCK, but needed a little more roll-with such a jammed packed stage, it was very hard for her to move about. This band was built for much larger venues, but don’t miss your chance to catch them up close and personal!
