COLDPLAY MAKES MUSICAL HISTORY WITH FIRST WEEK SALES OF X&Y

The new Coldplay album X&Y has debuted at #1 in 28 countries, including Canada, the U.S. and the UK; with more charts still to come later this week! By selling 105,289 copies in Canada first week, the album is officially the biggest debut of the year so far - not to mention EMI Canada's highest scanning album debut ever!

Canada is the only territory at this point, other than the UK, to scan Platinum first week. Coldplay is also the first artist in 3 years to achieve this landmark in Canada.

All of this doesn't even take into account the tremendous sales success digitally. After only its third day of release X&Y managed to grab the #1 spot in all territories on iTunes. In addition a special bonus track "Crest of Waves" promotion with Future Shop Bonfire entered at #1 on the Digital Download Chart in Canada.

"Yesterday was an exciting and significant day for EMI Music Canada," says Deane Cameron, President of EMI Music Canada. "The #1 debut in the Canadian national chart of Coldplay's X&Y album is incredibly exciting and is the highest first week scanning album in our history. We are very proud to be representing such a landmark band and their music."

"This weeks incredible sales are a testament to how devoted Coldplay's Canadian fans are," comments the band's Manager Dave Holmes.” The Canadian market repeatedly outperforms all other territories on a per capita basis, except for their home country. Once again EMI Music Canada has done an outstanding job in their set-up and execution for this band."

"As a follow-up to perhaps 'the best set-up' I have ever witnessed for a new release, the tremendous and, in some situations, unprecedented support from our 'Retail Partners' has culminated in the overwhelming nationwide consumer response to this amazing album," raves Al Andruchow, EMI Music Canada's VP of National Sales.

"HMV has reported massive week one sales for the much-anticipated Coldplay album X&Y. Even with our high expectations it was a great feeling to see that the sales of X&Y went above & beyond that and made it an unbelievable week for music sales in all of our stores. We are now very proud to say that Coldplay X&Y holds the biggest day one sales for a CD at our stores in Canada," says Ken Kirkwood, Director of Product of HMV Canada Inc.

Some other notable history-making highlights include: X&Y is the second fastest-selling album of all time in the UK with sales of close to half a million and is the biggest-selling rock debut in the U.S. so far this year after selling three-quarters of a million units.
