MAC VIVA GLAM FASHION CARES 2005- Celebrates Bollywood Style!

East met Western at the 2005 Fashion Cares event held on June 4, 2005 at the Metro Convention Centre with a MAC VIV GLAM Bollywood Cowboy theme.

This year in Fashion Cares' history four designers were honoured for their continued support since the inception of the event, more than 19 years ago; Hoax Couture(one of our favourites), Wayne Clark, Comrags and Mercy. This was an evening that will not be forgotten by the party goers and entertainers. More than 5000 guests attended with the hopes of raising one million dollars for a worthy cause.(Aids Committee of Toronto ACT)By the energy radiated from the crowd was a clear indication that they enjoyed the sounds of traditional Indian music, mystic and magic of dance and all the other exceptional talent that performed! One of the performers, Iman Grewal and her dance troupe previously performed at the Sugarcain Entertainment Launch party last September 2005. Here's what she had to say about her experience at this years Fashion Cares Gala Event!

O- Fashion Cares was all a buzz with a special theme this year. Bollywood Cowboy! How did this theme influence you?

I- The name 'Bollywood Cowboy' was to have an East meets West theme. Bollywood being Indian cinema has by far been THE most influential thing in my dance career. My inspirations, mentors are all from old Bollywood and now new Bollywood, the essence of my dance career is Bollywood.

O- You were hired to perform with a team or individual? How did you get this booking?

I- I was hired to dance with a team, Dj Zhara and The Funkasia crew, they have been around since 1998, involved in all sorts of charity, corporate and major club events in Toronto. Spreading love, positivity and equality is their mission. For more info on Dj Zhara and the Funkasia crew log onto www.djzhara.com . I got this booking through a colleague whom I perform with and who I also did a solo with at Fashion Cares, the very sexy, underestimated, never duplicated Junior, also accompanied by The DHol master of Tdot, Tej of ConTEJious productions, pics speak for themselves!

O- When did you go on?

I- We performed at approximately 9:45pm, after the auction.

O- How long was the performance?

I- Our solo performance was about 6 minutes, the choreography was all done by myself and Junior very traditional Indian dance vs urban dance and the audience made it even better with their high energy.

O- Any comments from celebs or party goers?

I- Unfortunately, the celebs were as busy as could be but part goers were definitely there to party and loved our performance, showing us by their high energy throughout the performance.

O- How did you feel about your own performance? What piece of music did you use and how did you select it for the show?

I- We were very pleased with our performance, lots of hard work was put into this piece, it was also for a cause that is very important to Kama Entertainment so it had to be the ultimate best performance. The pieces of music we used accompanied by the Dhow master, Tej, were 2 pieces combined, starting off with a spiritual piece with yoga choreography and Kamasutra poses with classical Indian dance moves, then into a very high energy piece by a record breaking UK bhangra artist(who we have also performed with) Sukhshinder Shinda, his songs are a mix of Bhangra beats and reggae. We selected these pieces to represent our culture to the fullest and in every style of Indian dance form.

O- Who designed your amazing costumes?

I- My amazing costume was an original Kama consultants piece, especially designed for Fashion cares, designed by Toronto's aspiring fashion designer who is also my sister, Dilraj(Dee) Grewal. My amazing make up was done also by Toronto's finest and most creative make up artist, Malinda Noronha who is KAMA Entertainment's official make up artist.

O- Every event of such magnitude often has some chaos going on behind the scenes, what was some of the chaos for you and your group?

I- The only chaos we had going on was being double booked that day, but my designer and amazing make up artist took care of everything like the true pros that they are, having less than half hour to get me out of one costume into another and make up, we were on time, oh, except for being in the wrong hall at first, ha ha, its all good, more adrenaline, better performance!

O- What did you find the most interesting about this event?

I- The most interesting thing is hard to say, there were too many interesting and fabulous things to be seen, it was truly a once in a lifetime experience, but if I had to point out one thing it would have to be the fashion, Toronto is so known for their fashion, so to see all the different Saree's, cowboy gear, Indian jewelery, western jewelery was awesome! O- Have you received some bookings as a result of this event?

I- We have been asked to do PRIDE WEEKEND through this event and we will be doing juts that on Saturday June 25th with Dj Amita, www.besharam.ca For costume consultation, contact Kama Consultants Dee @ 416-330-2346 or Kama make up artist Malinda @ 416-834-6717
