BABY STEINBERG

This Brazilian born artist and entrepreneur is known on the Toronto scene for her strong fashion statements and elaborate events.

“Going back and forth between Canada and Brazil gives me my inspiration and creativity”, she admits. Not known for her fondness to colder climates, she typically spends the winter season down south with an assortment of family members and friends. This is where her ideas develop and also where she buys
many of the materials she uses to make her jewelry.

She recently participated in Nuit Blanche events and the Art of Fashion Trunk Show at the Drake Hotel. Her collection can best be described as funky and bold. “It’s for individuals who want to have fun with fashion accessories”, she says. She’s also starting work on her line of fun jewelry, with the first piece being a necklace strewn with five small rubber chickens.

One of her main objectives is to be as environmentally friendly as possible. She works with various natural products such as hemp, seeds, and other fibres. Out
of this passion for green has evolved her “Garbage Garments” designs of costumes made of recyclable materials. She uses everything from plastic bags and used appliances, to shredded clothing and cardboard. One of her creations was a gown made exclusively of cell phone parts and accessories, which was
recently purchased by a shop on Queen Street for their window display. “I want to be able to design more show pieces for bars and shops in the city, and I’m
open to suggestions and ideas”, she states.

The public will have an opportunity to view and purchase some of her collection at the Reception Launch being held on October 24th at Koma Designs, 1239 Queen Street West, from 8pm to 11pm. As well, her work can be seen at the Meet My Art Fashion Show happening on October 30th at Wrongbar, 1279 Queen Street West, starting at 9pm.
