2010 Much Music Video Awards
The Much Music Video Awards. A fantastic street party combining great music, tons of people, and a celebrity guest list that’s four pages long. Each year the party gets larger and the celebrities get bigger and this year it’s proven, with over a million viewers tuning in to watch the biggest Canadian awards party of the year.

The lines started early with fans wanting to get the best spot by one the massive stages that would hold some of the biggest entertainers of the world. With acts like Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Adam Lambert, Down with Webster, Marianas Trench, Drake, Katy Perry, Ke$ha and Hedley gracing the stage to perform, everyone was buzzing with excitement and anticipation. There were even a few girl fights that were no doubt brought on by the summer heat, the close quarters of everybody, and everybody wanting to get up close and personal with their favorite celebs.
The great thing about the MMVA’s is the fact that Much Music makes it all about the fans. As most award shows are usually about the celebrities, they sometimes forget that without the fans there wouldn’t be a reason for these shows to even exist. This time around, it was only about the fans. The thousands that showed up were treated to full-out performances full of loud music, pyrotechnics, and even sugar coated candy costumes.
There were thousands of screaming girls (and plenty of guys) there to support their favorite act and to help kick off the summer of 2010. Although a day early, wherever you looked there were boisterous fans, “I Love Justin Bieber” headbands and cameras galore to capture this one-in-a-lifetime event!
Much Music said it was all about the fans, and it really was all about the fans. This year they decided to forgo the swag shop, which as you know usually gifted all the celebrities in attendance. Instead Much Music donated $10,000 to Young Artists for Haiti in behalf of all the celebrities. An incredible idea to help out Haiti and to support such a great cause that a lot of fans are on board with.
The performers are one thing but guest list of celebrities were just as important to the fans. Just catching a glimpse of their favorite TV, Movie or Sports star was just as exciting as all the musicians in their presence. The list is unbelievably long but just to mention a few:
- Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene and Xavier Samuel (Twilight: Eclipse)
- Jonathan Toews (Blackhawks Captain and winner of the 2010 Stanley Cup, 2010 Gold Medalist)
- Snooki and Pauly D (Jersey Shore)
- Jackson Rathbone and Nicola Peltz (The Last Airebender)
- JLS (international pop group)
- Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries)
- Whitney Port (The City), Kristin Cavellari (The Hills)
- Perez Hilton (Celebrity Blogger Extraordinaire)
These names are just a few of the A-listers who attended this year’s MMVA’s. There were many others within the Canadian and American entertainment industry that walked the red carpet and had fun in the Smarties Blue Room.
Each performer brought a different aspect to the table and allowed the fans to gain a taste of what a full concert with the celebrity would entail. Marianas Trench took over the rooftop dancing around on a clear stage for everyone to see. They also included a little Gaga-inspired stunt which lead singer Josh Ramsay proudly showed off boob fireworks while performing their hit “Celebrity Status”! Katy Perry brought out the best of her song “California Gurls” (or shall we say “Canadian Gurls?”) when her and her dancers donned candy inspired costumes and props that looked entirely edible.
Adam Lambert brought his usual finesse that wowed the crowd as he sang “Whataya Want From Me” and gave the crowd a taste of what they may have missed at Kiss 92.5’s “Wham Bam” concert that took place the night before at The Molson Amphitheatre. Drake started off with a few technical difficulties but ended up pleasing the crowd with his ever popular “Over”. Hedley chose to do their extremely popular hit “Perfect” that had the girls screaming. They also included a little fire to add to the spectacle and their overall performance was nothing short of perfect.
Down With Webster did their thing singing “Your Man” with a full drum line and brass supporting their already 7-man band. Ke$ha brought out her animal instincts while singing her infamous “Tik Tok”. It was rumored she was going to do a stunt, but seemed like she decided to be a little tame instead of wild walking through the crowd instead.
The two biggest performances of the night included Miley Cyrus who opened and closed the show with her chart-topping hits “Party in the USA” and “Can’t be Tamed”. Miley is a very talented young lady and her voice was top notch and her performance was beyond incredible. She really knows how to entertain a crowd. Justin Bieber wooed all the screaming girls with two hits combined into one which included his most recent “Somebody to Love” and “Baby” where he rapped Ludacris’ part on his own. Justin is also another amazing performer, especially for somebody so young. His dance skills may not top that of Michael Jackson’s but he still knows how to get his groove on.
Despite some technical glitches (as to be expected - it is a live show after all!), the show was definitely a success. Time will only tell, but it is pretty much guaranteed that next year’s MMVA’s will be even bigger than ever as the award show keeps gaining momentum and bigger names than the year before. It’ll be something to look forward to whether you’re a music lover, pre-teen, or even a mom. The MMVA’s keep surpassing everyone’s expectations, and will continue to do so in the future.
