Sir Sean Connery receives 34th AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Sir Sean Connery was selected to receive the 34th AFI Life Achievement Award, the highest honor for a career in film. The award was presented to Connery at a gala tribute in Los Angeles on June 8, 2006 in Los Angeles.

The AFI Life Achievement Award was established by the AFI Board of Trustees on February 26, 1973. It is presented to a single honoree each year based on the following criteria as mandated through a resolution passed by the AFI Board of Trustees:

“The recipient should be one whose talent has in a fundamental way advanced the film art; whose accomplishment has been acknowledged by scholars, critics, professional peers and the general public; and whose work has stood the test of time.”

Sean Connery has been knighted previously and now has received his lifetime achievement award, now if only he had a different view on what women need now and again. Sean was reported in earlier years to have said that under the right conditions that it was okay to “smack a woman”. I have always hoped that he meant that in the midst of a steamy, playful romp and not an act of violence.

In 1993, the trustees extended the criteria to encompass “individuals with active careers and work of significance yet to be accomplished.”

USA Network will broadcast the 34TH AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: A TRIBUTE TO SEAN CONNERY on June 21, 2006 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).
